Having evolved from rural backwater at what first seemed a despot tsar whim, St. Petersburg grew into a magnificent city whose splendor and spectacular looks all but clearly manifest that the forward-thinking, Westward-looking tsar had a stroke of inspiration when choosing the place for his northern capital. The city boasts a character of its own entirely different from Moscow's onion domes and red brick buildings.
