In order to take Kazan Ivan the Terrible needed a special fort - resting base not far away from the capital of the Kazan khanate. In order to spare some time the fort was built of logs on the Upper Volga in the town Uglitch, then the logs were given a number and the fort was taken apart and floated downstream the Volga River . In the very short terms the fort was built up out of floated logs in 40 km from Kazan along the Volga River . Soon Kazan was taken and Sviyazhsk got a full-grown town by the end of the 1560th. Nowadays you can see such sights on the island as the Assumption cathedral of the 16th century, the Trinity and Nicolas churches, the church of Constantine and Helene, the church of the Lady “Consolation of All Who Sorrow”, and the Museum of Architecture and Art etc.
